VAN CLEEF MEMORIAL MEDAL

Van-Cleef-300x136.png

Dr. Eugene Van Cleef was one of the first American urban geographers. He was a Professor Emeritus of Geography at Ohio State University and taught its first urban geography course, eventually creating an entire curriculum out of it. In these courses, he sought to apply geography to the business world, first detailing the topic in his book “Trade Centers and Trade Routes.” This was the first American-produced book on the subject.

Dr. Van Cleef created the Van Cleef Medal in 1970 in honor of his wife, Frieda Van Cleef. He established the medal to honor “scholars who have done outstanding original work in the field of urban geography, preferably, though not necessarily, in applied rather than theoretical aspects.” The medal was designed by Joseph DiLorenzo.
