Boateng was the first Ghanaian Professor of Geography, he was appointed lecturer of geography at the University of Ghana in 1950 after receiving his bachelor’s degree. He was promoted to Professor and Chair of the Department in 1961 after the completion of his master’s. In addition to service in the Department of Geography, Boateng was the first Vice Chancellor of the University of Ghana and the first Chairman of the Environmental Protection Council of Ghana. He served on many national and international committees including the UNESCO International Advisory Committee on Humid Tropics Research. Boateng was a member of the Ghana delegation at the United Nations Conference on Geographical Names and the United Nations General Assembly. He was a contributor to the Encyclopedia Britannica for over 20 years and authored a number of books and articles. Dr. Boateng received the Henry Oliver Becket Memorial Prize for Geography.
